The mission of RMCHCS is to serve God by making a profound and lasting difference in the health and quality of life for all people in the community.

Western Health Foundation

Mission

The Western Health Foundation supports Rehoboth McKinley Christian Health Care Services (RMCHCS) in delivering high-quality healthcare locally. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve been deeply grateful for community support. Donations of essentials like food, PPE, and cash have greatly impacted our staff and community. While vaccines have reduced hospitalizations, rising cases from variants like Delta remind us to stay prepared. We continue working to ensure resources for all patients.

Our annual fundraiser, the Charity Invitational, has been postponed but will return. Meanwhile, we invite you to support ongoing projects that need your help.

History

In 1983, Dr. Thomas Carmany, RMCHCS’s pathologist, led the merger of Rehoboth Christian Hospital and McKinley County General Hospital, foreseeing a future need for private funding to enhance facilities and support services for those facing substance use disorders. In 1986, Dr. Carmany gathered influential community leaders, incorporating the Western Health Foundation as a 501(c)(3) organization. Since then, the Foundation has raised funds for medical equipment, facility improvements, and new programs and services to fulfill RMCHCS’s mission.

Projects We Support

Patient Emergency Fund

Thanks to a $30,000 donation from the Safeway Foundation, the Patient Emergency Fund offers emergency assistance to patients leaving the hospital who lack resources for essentials like transportation, temporary housing, oxygen, and medical supplies. Donations ensure that this support can continue to help patients in need.

COVID-19 Fund

Contributions to the COVID-19 Fund help provide meals and other support for front-line workers, as well as funding for the Hotel Isolation program for individuals and families who need a safe space to quarantine while recovering from COVID-19.

Mobile Health Clinic

The “Healthcare on the Road” mobile health unit provides essential services such as women’s health, podiatry, and health education to communities on the Navajo-Ramah Reservation. This project was made possible with grants from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Rural Outreach Program, as well as support from Americans for Native American (ANA), Rotary International, Gallup Rotary Club, the Community Outreach and Patient Empowerment (COPE) Program, and Pine Hill Health Center.

Rural Family Medicine
Residency Program

In July 2021, RMCHCS welcomed its first cohort of four residents to its new three-year Rural Family Medicine Residency Program. This program trains family medicine residents to deliver high-quality, culturally competent care to rural and Native American communities in New Mexico and the Four Corners region. Emphasis is placed on recruiting a diverse group of residents, including Native American physicians committed to Native health, to address the region’s physician shortage.

The Foundation provided funds to help create a Family Medicine wing at RMCHCS’s primary care clinic—College Clinic—in preparation for the residency program. Note: Residency Program Services are temporarily closed.

Rural Family Medicine Residency Endowment

The Foundation has established an endowment to provide ongoing support for the Family Medicine Residency Program and invites donations to help grow this fund.

General Fund

Donations to the General Fund enable the Foundation to support a wide range of needs, allowing resources to be directed where they are most urgently needed.

Chaplaincy Program

The RMCHCS chaplain provides spiritual and emotional support to patients, families, and staff members facing critical illness, loss, and the challenges of the pandemic. Many staff members have also suffered personal losses, and the chaplaincy offers them much-needed support. For more information, call 505-863-7287.

Reach Out and Read Program

The Reach Out and Read Program is a national literacy initiative where RMCHCS pediatricians teach parents the importance of reading with their children from birth. Each year, RMCHCS distributes over 5,000 books to children ages 0-5 to encourage early literacy. The Foundation helps fund the purchase of these books and welcomes donations to support this effort.
