CUSTOMER SERVICE
ANNOUNCEMENT

We are pleased to announce that Rehoboth McKinley Christian Health Care Services (RMCHCS) has successfully transitioned from an acute care hospital to a Critical Access Hospital (CAH). This designation primarily affects how we receive Medicare payments and requires certain changes in documenting patient stay lengths in medical charts.

Important Medicare Billing Updates

Our transition to CAH status has impacted Medicare billing for patients with traditional Medicare. While we officially began the new Medicare billing process on January 19, 2024, the CAH designation retroactively took effect on August 3, 2023. Unfortunately, we did not receive the updated billing guidelines from Medicare until mid-January, so we must rebill all Medicare claims dating back to August 3, 2023.

What This Means for You

  • Medicare will recover our payments for services since August 3, 2023, and new claims will be submitted.
  • This process may generate revised statements, reflecting changes in patient responsibility amounts. These adjustments are due to Medicare’s rules under CAH status.
  • As a CAH, Medicare typically covers 80% of a bill, with the patient responsible for the remaining 20%.

If you have secondary insurance (e.g., Aetna or Humana), we will submit the 20% patient responsibility to that insurer, which generally covers it on your behalf. This is the standard Medicare billing process under CAH regulations.

For Patients Without Secondary or Supplemental Insurance

If you have traditional Medicare but no secondary or supplemental insurance, you may experience changes to your billing.
